When it comes to your hot water heating system you have several choices, one of which is sure to meet your budget and family’s needs. There are five basic types of systems:
Electric
Electric water heaters are usually comprised of a standalone tank that produces, stores and serves hot water that is heated by an electric element. Uses energy whenever hot water is used or water in the storage tank falls below a preset temperature.
Gas or Oil Fired
Gas or oil fired water heaters are comprised of a standalone tank that produces, stores and serves hot water that is heated by either a gas or oil-fired burner. Uses energy whenever hot water is used or water in the storage tank falls below a preset temperature.
On Demand
On demand water heaters are usually compact, wall mounted, tankless, gas fired systems. They do not store hot water. These systems instantly produce and serve hot water – hence the term “on demand”. Because they only use energy when hot water is being used, they can dramatically reduce your water heating costs.
Indirect
indirect water heaters are standalone tanks that store and serve hot water that is produced indirectly with hot water circulated from your boiler system. Uses energy, by causing the boiler to run ( if the boiler water is below the boilers’ preset temperature – typically 180+℉ ) whenever hot water is used or water in the storage tank falls below a preset temperature.
Tankless Coil
A tankless coil water heating system continuously serves hot water directly produced by your boiler. A tankless coil (not to be confused with on-demand tankless systems) seems like a good idea because it uses the heat from your boiler vessel to directly produce household hot water. With today’s energy prices, it is quite inefficient because your system must be run nearly continuously to maintain a boiler temperature of 180+ degrees in order for this type of system to work.
